We had our New Moon in Aquarius at around 5 pm CST this Friday evening.
The Aquarian realm is vital right now, with Pluto having just moved into Aquarius and Jupiter moving into a conjunction with Uranus, the contemporary ruler of Aquarius, this spring. This New Moon takes place alongside Mercury’s presence in Aquarius, and in the next couple of weeks, Mars and Venus will be entering as well, making a triple conjunction with Pluto in the process. Altogether, it’s a packed house.
This New Moon is about rebooting and renewing our relationships with Aquarian subjects. At its most condensed, the Aquarian terrain has to do with technology and our connections to our quirky, unique divine spark and bigger circles or networks that we feel a part of. Still, a whole host of tricky, if not paradoxical, questions are encountered in this field.
I thought I’d take time to list some of my core questions in navigating Aquaria. These feel both timely and timeless. They’re relevant to both the long-term shift we’re getting a solid taste of in the moment and the whirlpool ahead of us this month. They’ll also deepen in intensity and complexity over the next two decades, and as such, I invite input if you have anything to offer in unwinding any of these riddles!
How do we reckon with the force of technology in shaping our lives and changing what it means to be human while embracing its potential as a tool for expanding our creative capacities and transcending existing limitations?
Where can eccentricity and spontaneity be encouraged and celebrated, and where do we recognize them as maladaptive and unsustainable?
When can the individual’s freedom and responsibility be championed, and when does that become lonely, isolating, or a self-enclosed narcissism?
How do we maintain a spirit of progress rooted in healthy development or evolution and doesn’t aggrandize change or novelty for its own sake?
How do we find a radical or revolutionary spirit that isn’t just excitement-seeking or reactionary but can initiate systematic change with depth and foresight?
What are the proper places for quick fixes and hacks, and where does hastiness or acceleration worsen things?
How can we connect to a spirit of Utopia or a New Age while recognizing and transcending the baggage each of those terms comes with?
How can we experience, understand, and relate to our bodies as electrical and vibrational, with the full consequences of what that might mean on an electrified earth?
How can we build cultures and communities that integrate outcasts and the marginalized so they feel genuinely desired and included?
How can we keep faith in human ingenuity and the possibility of powerful technological breakthroughs despite their likelihood of being coopted by capitalism?
The Aquarian domain will look different for all of us—Aquarius falls in different houses. For many, these questions are professional or financial; for others, the Aquarian realm brings questions of the heart and the structures of our relationships. But one thing is sure—the type of change that Pluto brings is comprehensive, total, and exhaustive. In the next 20 years of Pluto in Aquarius, we’ll undergo the full range of possibilities of archetypal manifestations—all of the heavens and hells of whatever house Aquarius falls in for you, with no stone unturned. With so much action in Aquarius, this next month will likely give us a taste of these many riddles and initiatory ideals.
In navigating all of this, it might be good to have your eye on a north star—and in the Tarot, Aquarius is associated with The Star card. This card conveys a taste of a divine plan, a heavenly order, and a unique destiny for each of us, even if the entirety of that celestial or angelic gift is not clear. I love the idea from anthroposophy that humanity’s destiny is to become the 10th hierarchy—the Spirits of Love and Freedom, becoming like angels to some other form of life that will follow us. Thinking about a sort of total evolution of humanity towards an angelic ideal, it makes sense that the ordeals we’d face, initiation and purification would be titanic. By no means will this process be complete by 2044, but I reckon we’ll actually progress a whole lot.
Here’s a lovely verse from Steiner that, it seems to me, can guide us through this process:
"The wishes of the soul are springing
The deeds of the will are thriving
The fruits of life are maturingI feel my destiny
My destiny finds me
I feel my star
My star finds me
I feel my goals in life
My goals in life are finding me
My soul and the great universe are oneLife grows more radiant about me
Life grows more challenging for me
Life grows more abundant within me."
